Kootenay Association for Science and Technology launches TechEdge program

A new initiative in British Columbia’s Kootenay region is helping rural small businesses navigate the growing use of artificial intelligence by identifying tools that are practical, affordable and secure.

Backed by approximately $100,000 in provincial funding, the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) will launch its TechEdge program to provide AI and digital assessments tailored to individual business needs.

KAST Executive Director Priya Biswas said the program aims to close knowledge and support gaps that often prevent rural businesses from adopting new technologies effectively. Local business leaders expressed interest in AI’s potential to improve efficiency but raised concerns about data security, customer privacy and access to technical expertise. A pilot involving three to five businesses is expected to begin later this year as part of broader efforts to increase AI adoption among Canadian businesses.
